“Woke” is taken here in its original sense of being aware of social prejudices and inequality, and acting toward equality and inclusion. In Pope Leo XIV’s words: “Woke is no insult. It means awakened by compassion, humbled by grace. Committed to justice, not for some, but for all.” The term is now often used negatively by those who oppose the policies inspired by those principles.
