Performances as Communication Processes

– Observe a busker (street performer) and analyse  their (short) performance in terns of the Jakobson’s functions. Report your observations by identifying what formed the main message and whether you noticed examples of the conative, emotive, and phatic functions during the delivery of the message. Indicate also whether the performer produced bits of meta-communicative instances.

– Search examples of recorded performances in the Internet in any genre (singing, music, dance, opera, etc.) and try to focus on the part played by any one of the Jakobson’s functions. For example, note implicit or explicit comments produced through words or gestures by the performers on their own performance (meta-communicative function), or focus on the part played by the phatic function (supplementary connection with the audience) in the quality of the performance.
